The Russian government is threatening Australia with a cyber attack if the government doesn’t help the investigation into the Russian government’s meddling in the US election.
Key points:Russian state media said the US investigation would be compromised”If the investigation of Russia is compromised, it will be the biggest disaster of our century,” the Interfax news agency quoted the Russian foreign ministry as saying.
“We can do nothing.
The investigation will be compromised.
The results of the investigation will not be released.
This is not the time for such trivialities,” Interfax quoted a foreign ministry spokesman as saying in a statement.
The statement said the “Russia-US political, economic and security alliance is not only a threat to global peace and security, but also a danger to international and regional security and the rights of all countries”.
“We will make every effort to strengthen this alliance, which is an important partner of the United States and of the whole world,” the statement added.
Russia has denied it was behind the hacks, but said the Democratic National Committee (DNC) had been hacked by Russia.
Russia’s state-owned news agency, RIA Novosti, said the hack was carried out by a group that was linked to the US.
“The American intelligence agency has confirmed that the Russian hacking group was the source of the attack,” RIA said in a report.
“It is not possible to attribute the attack to a single nation.
The US intelligence agency did not attribute the incident to the Russian Federation.”
The US intelligence agencies have said the Russian Government interfered in the election by hacking emails from Democratic Party officials and officials of the US Chamber of Commerce, but that the hackers were not the ones who broke into the DNC and other political organisations.
The US Government is also considering the possibility that Russia interfered in other US election campaigns, according to the report.US President Donald Trump said last week that the DNC hack was the “biggest political crime of our lifetimes” and that it could lead to sanctions against Russia.
Russian President Vladimir Putin also accused the US of “stealing” his election win, after Mr Trump said he would have won the election if he had not accepted the results of a third-party recount that the Democrats won.
The DNC hack came after the US State Department said it had found evidence of Russian hacking of Democratic party emails.
Russian Foreign Ministry spokesman Dmitry Peskov told the Intercom news agency that the attack had “no place in our world”.
“If we want to stop the cyber aggression and restore trust and respect between Russia and the US, it is essential to find ways of preventing these activities from taking place,” he said.
“But, if we think that the US is planning to launch a war with Russia, it would be a mistake to act as if this is a serious possibility.”
